Description

I created this for my Art II class in high school. The assignment was "Ordinary to Extraordinary." The objective was to take a common everyday object and create something out of it. The idea was to use repetition. Pencils were the common choice for students because of the simplicity and versatility. I initially thought of using a wrench, but decided to stick with pencils in the end. While the assignment asked us to use color pencils, I opted for using watercolor. It was really fun making this.

In spring of 2008 several students in my class, including myself, participated in the local Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE). That was the first and only time I participated and it was very interesting. This is one of the pieces that my art teacher chose from my portfolio for the competition. We were only allowed to enter two pieces total. This was actually the first time our school had participated in VASE and I feel like it was either the only time, but it may have continued until the point of my teacher's retirement. I may have to find by asking her. One can be hopeful for some type of award and since there's scholarship money and state participation as a possibility one gets excited. My art piece received a Superior Rating and I received a medal for it. That to me was great and I was stoked! The art pieces that receive Superior ratings are judged again for higher prizes and state participation. I felt great knowing that I made it that far. Since it was my senior year in high school that would be the only time that I would participate and I went home with a lot more than I thought I would.
